You step into the gym, pull your trusted shin pads out of your bag, and ignore the slightly peeling leather and the strap that doesn't stick like it used to. They've gotten you through countless training sessions, so what's the harm in stretching their lifespan a little longer?
In reality, those worn-out shin guards are doing much less for you than you think. Yes, overused or degraded shin pads absolutely increase your risk of injury.

The primary job of a shin guard is shock absorption and energy dissipation. High-quality pads use dense, layered foam to absorb the vast majority of an impact force.
Over time, constant impact from checking kicks or blocking hard contacts permanently compresses this internal foam.
