If you look into the gear bag of a modern combat sports athlete, you’ll likely see a massive crossover of equipment. Strikers routinely jump between Boxing, Muay Thai, and Kickboxing training blocks, often using the same hand wraps, mouthguards, and 16-ounce sparring gloves across all three disciplines.
But when it comes to apparel, things get highly specific. If you walk into a dedicated kickboxing class wearing traditional, flashy satin Muay Thai shorts, a common question pops up: Is this allowed, or am I breaking a major rule of ring etiquette?
The short answer is yes, absolutely—with a few minor exceptions depending on whether you are training in a gym or stepping into a professional ring. Here is everything you need to know about how Muay Thai shorts behave in the world of kickboxing.
If your primary goal is everyday training, fitness, pad work, and sparring inside a local gym, you can wear whatever style of athletic shorts you want. Muay Thai shorts are widely respected across all striking arts. No reputable kickboxing coach will turn you away from the mats for wearing them. In fact, because Muay Thai shorts are purpose-built for heavy, high-velocity leg kicks, they are technically far superior for a kickboxing class than standard basketball shorts or running shorts.
Kickboxing requires immense hip mobility. Styles like K-1 or American Kickboxing demand rapid-fire head kicks, spinning back-kicks, and jumping knees.
Traditional Muay Thai shorts are engineered specifically to facilitate these exact movements:
The Flared Leg Cut: Muay Thai shorts feature a wide, voluminous leg opening. This ensures that when you rotate your hips to fire a roundhouse kick, the fabric glides smoothly over your quadriceps rather than catching on your thigh and pulling your kick short.
The Side-Slits: Most modern Thai shorts feature a deep V-cut side-slit. This completely removes fabric tension from the outer thigh, allowing your legs to open to their true anatomical limit.
The Waistband Anchor: The thick, rigid elastic waistband stays locked tightly to your midsection. It won't slip down or shift when you sprawl, duck, or throw high volume combinations.
While you can wear whatever you want during a Tuesday evening training block, the rules change completely if you plan on entering an official kickboxing tournament or amateur match.
Different kickboxing governing bodies have incredibly strict dress codes:

Can You Wear Muay Thai Shorts? |

Traditional American Kickboxing |
Fighters must wear long, silk-style martial arts pants. No bare legs allowed. |
NO. You will be disqualified at the rules meeting. |

K-1 / Glory Kickboxing Rules |
Fighters wear sleek, tight-fit hybrid fight shorts or specialized kickboxing trunks. |
SOMETIMES. You can wear them only if you roll the waistband down and they do not feature traditional Thai script lettering. |
Many international kickboxing promotions have strict rules banning religious, political, or highly specific foreign cultural iconography on apparel unless you are fighting under that specific sport's banner. Traditional Muay Thai shorts almost always feature bold, beautiful Thai alphabet embroidery (such as มวยไทย). In an official K-1 rules kickboxing match, a referee or commission official may require you to change into neutral shorts or tape over the lettering.
If you want the incredible freedom of a Muay Thai short but prefer the sleek, modern aesthetic of global kickboxing promotions like GLORY, look for the Retro Cut or Slim-Fit variations.
Classic Muay Thai Cut ➔ Massive 8-band waistband, ultra-wide flared satin legs, sits above belly button.
Modern Kickboxing Cut ➔ Narrow 4-band waistband, mid-thigh tailored fit, high side-slits, zero bulk.
Our modern Fairtex Slim-Fit Shorts bridge this gap perfectly. They strip away the massive, bulky 8-band waistband of the 1990s and replace it with a low-profile, comfortable elastic band. The legs are cut shorter and feature a clean, aerodynamic silhouette. You get 100% of the kicking mobility without the excessive, bunching satin fabric of a traditional stadium trunk.
Don't overthink it for your daily training. If you have a pair of high-quality Fairtex satin shorts, pack them in your bag and wear them proudly to your next kickboxing session. Your hips will have total freedom to move, your skin will stay cool, and you’ll be able to fire off kicks without a single clothing distraction holding you back.
Do you train exclusively in a kickboxing program, or do you jump back and forth between traditional Muay Thai and hybrid striking classes?
