In modern combat sports terminology, "boxing trunks" and "boxing shorts" refer to the exact same piece of athletic gear. The terms are used interchangeably by fight brands, athletes, and equipment manufacturers worldwide.
However, confusion often arises because the words "trunks" and "shorts" carry vastly different structural meanings when compared to everyday undergarments (boxer shorts vs. trunk underwear) or other combat sports gear (MMA shorts vs. Muay Thai shorts).
Boxing trunks are traditional, loose-fitting athletic shorts engineered specifically for Western boxing. Crafted from lightweight, low-friction materials like satin, high-grade polyester, or silk, they are defined by three distinct mechanical features:
Extra-Wide Elastic Waistband (4–6 Inches): Sits high on the waist (typically above the belly button). This wide band locks the trunks over a heavy protective groin cup, provides core support, and gives the referee a clear visual "foul line" to judge low blows.
Roomy, Mid-Length Cut: Extends down to the upper or middle knee. The billowy, non-restrictive fit ensures completely unhindered footwork, pivoting, and lunging without the fabric catching on the thighs.
Deep Side Slits: Cut along the outer leg seams to allow total lateral leg extension and fluid hip rotation during explosive punches.
While boxing trunks and boxing shorts are identical inside the ring, understanding how the terminology shifts across different gear types helps prevent ordering the wrong apparel for your training:

Historical Origin: The term "trunks" comes from early 20th-century boxing, where fighters wore stiff, leather-belted trunks. In 1925, Everlast founder Jacob Golomb replaced the leather belts with flexible elastic waistbands, inventing the modern "boxer trunk." That elastic-waist design was later adopted into men's everyday undergarments, giving us modern "boxer shorts"!
