Stepping into a Muay Thai gym for the first time can feel a little intimidating. You’re about to enter a space filled with the sounds of heavy bags slamming, pads cracking, and people working harder than they ever have before.
But here is a secret: every single person in that gym—including the trainers and the fighters—started exactly where you are today.
The best way to quiet those first-day jitters and show up with confidence is to make sure you have the right tools for the job. You don't need to buy out an entire pro shop before your first hour, but you do need a smart selection of essentials. Here is the definitive checklist of exactly what to pack in your gym bag for day one.
This is the single piece of equipment you must own on day one. Most gyms will let you borrow a pair of loaner gloves for your trial class, but sharing unwashed hand wraps is a massive hygiene risk. Hand wraps protect the dozens of small bones in your hands and stabilize your wrists.
The Fairtex Tip: Get the 180-inch semi-elastic (Mexican style) wraps. The shorter 120-inch wraps don't offer enough material to properly protect an adult's knuckles and wrists.
Muay Thai is a grueling, full-body cardiovascular workout. You will sweat more in your first 45 minutes than you do during a week of standard weightlifting. Bring a large, insulated water bottle packed with ice water. You’ll get short water breaks between rounds—make them count.
Do yourself and your training partners a favor and pack a small microfiber hand towel. You'll need it to wipe the sweat from your face and hands between drills so you don't lose your grip inside the loaner gloves.
Wear comfortable, athletic clothing that allows you to move freely. A standard breathable t-shirt or tank top paired with athletic shorts is perfect.
The Golden Rule: Avoid shorts with zippers, buttons, or deep open pockets. Your training partners' fingers or toes can easily get caught in them during partner drills or clinching.
Not for your first class! Traditional satin Muay Thai shorts are excellent because they have a wide leg opening designed for high kicks, but save that purchase for when you decide to stick with the sport.
Muay Thai is practiced completely barefoot on specialized foam mats. You don't need any special footwear, but wearing slip-on shoes or sandals (like slides) to the gym is highly recommended so you can easily step out of them before walking onto the canvas.
You are going to leave class with a soaking wet shirt and drenched hand wraps. Do not throw them directly into your gym bag unless you want it to smell like a locker room forever. Pack a separate plastic bag or wet bag to isolate your dirty gear.
If you have to head back to work or run errands after class, a quick pack of body wipes and fresh deodorant will be an absolute lifesaver.
Don't rush out and buy expensive boxing gloves, shin guards, or mouthguards before your first session.
Gloves: Almost every reputable gym has a wall of clean loaner gloves (usually 14 oz or 16 oz) specifically for beginners to use during their trial phase.
Shin Guards: Your first few weeks will focus on fundamental stance, footwork, and hitting pads. You won't be doing any live sparring or checking hard kicks right away, so shin guards aren't necessary yet.
