For decades, there was an absolute hierarchy in combat sports gear: real cowhide leather was the gold standard, and synthetic alternatives (like vinyl or cheap PVC) were cheap, plasticky options reserved for beginners. If you were serious about your training, you bought real leather.
But walk into a modern MMA gym today, and you’ll see top-tier pros and coaches rocking gear made from microfiber leather. Brands like Fairtex—famous for their ultra-durable Thai leather—are heavily incorporating engineered microfibers (like their signature Syntek leather) into their flagship gloves, shin guards, and belly pads.
This isn't a cost-cutting measure; it's a technical upgrade. Let’s look at why microfiber leather is rapidly taking over the MMA world.
To understand why microfiber is different, you have to look at how it’s made. Standard synthetic leather (PU) is essentially a sheet of plastic glued onto a fabric backing. When it takes an impact, it deforms, cracks, and eventually peels off in chunks.
Microfiber leather, however, is a non-woven fabric made of high-grade polyurethane resins and ultra-fine microfibers.
The Structure: It structurally mimics the interwoven collagen fiber network of natural animal skin.
The Result: It doesn't have a "layer" that can peel off. It stretches, rebounds, and handles high-intensity friction exactly like premium leather.
MMA gear faces a harsher environment than standard boxing gear. Because MMA training involves grappling, wrestling, and wall work, your gear is constantly soaked not just in your sweat, but your training partners' sweat too.
The Leather Problem: Real leather has natural pores. While this makes it breathable, it also means it acts like a sponge for moisture and bacteria. If you don't condition real leather, the salt and acid in your sweat will eventually dry it out, causing it to stiffen and crack.
The Microfiber Solution: Microfiber is highly moisture-resistant. It won't absorb sweat into the core of the material, making it up to 75% more resistant to bacterial growth and odor than real leather. It resists hydrolysis (the chemical breakdown caused by trapped moisture), meaning you can wipe it clean after a grueling mat session and it won't rot or smell like a locker room.
If you’ve ever bought a pair of premium cowhide leather boxing gloves or shin guards, you know the pain of the first two weeks. Real leather is stiff; it takes time, sweat, and bruised knuckles to mold it to the unique anatomy of your hand.
Microfiber gear—like the Fairtex BGV14 series—offers immediate comfort out of the box. The material is inherently supple, lightweight, and flexible, allowing you to form a perfect, tight fist or flex your foot during grappling drills from day one, without sacrificing structural wrist support.
Because MMA requires constant transitions from striking to the floor, your gear takes a beating from unexpected angles. Dragging a glove across canvas, catching it on a steel cage wire, or scraping it during a scramble can easily scuff or tear standard materials.
Microfiber actually outperforms mid-grade leather in terms of tensile strength and tear resistance. It doesn't suffer from the natural imperfections or weak spots found in animal hides, ensuring completely consistent durability across every square inch of the gear.

While natural leather will always have an iconic smell, a premium feel, and an immortal status if perfectly cared for, microfiber leather is simply more practical for the modern MMA fighter. It handles the moisture of grappling, requires zero maintenance, costs slightly less, and lasts just as long under heavy gym abuse.
The Fairtex Pro-Tip: Look at your training frequency. If you are on the mats 4–5 days a week sweating through multiple striking and grappling classes, adding a piece of microfiber gear to your rotation will save your wallet and keep your gym bag smelling fresh.
Have you made the switch to microfiber gear yet, or are you a die-hard purist for the smell of traditional real leather?
