In Muay Thai, Kickboxing, and MMA, your shin guards are your primary shield against bone-on-bone impact. A proper fit ensures your tibia, knee, and foot instep are completely protected without restricting your footwork, sliding mid-combination, or forcing you to stop and adjust your gear every round.
Whether you are picking up your first pair or upgrading to Fairtex’s competition-tested guards, finding the right size requires understanding precise anatomical measurements and key fit indicators.
Here is everything you need to know about reading a shin guard size chart and evaluating how should shin guards fit for maximum protection on the mat.
When trying on a pair of Muay Thai shin guards, they should feel locked to your legs like armor. They should fit snugly around the calf muscles and rest flush against the front of your tibia.
To ensure your shin guards fit correctly, check these four critical areas:
Top Edge Position (Knee Clearance): The top ridge of the shin guard should sit directly below your kneecap (patella) when standing straight. If the guard covers or presses against your kneecap, it will dig into your joint when you bend your knees to check a kick or shoot for a takedown.
Instep & Toe Coverage: The foot flap (instep) should extend down the top of your foot to cover your metatarsals, stopping just short of your toes. Your toes should remain fully exposed to ensure solid floor traction during pivots and footwork.
Strapping Security: The rear hook-and-loop straps should secure tightly around your calf without choking blood flow. If you have to pull the velcro past its landing pad to get a tight fit, the guard is too large.
Zero Lateral Rotation: Give the shin guard a firm twist with your hands. If it rotates easily around your shin, it will twist during live sparring, exposing your tibia to bone-on-bone impacts.
Size charts are primarily based on your shin length (measured from just below the kneecap down to the top of the ankle bone) and your overall height.

Note: If your height and shin length fall between two sizes, choose the smaller size if you prefer a compact, mobility-focused fit, or the larger size if you prioritize maximum coverage for hard sparring.
Do not rely on your shoe size or pants inseam—shin guard sizing requires specific leg measurements.
Sit on a Chair with Your Knee Bent at 90 Degrees: Keep your foot flat on the floor.
Measure the Shin Length: Place a flexible tape measure starting 1 inch below the bottom of your kneecap and run it straight down to the top curve of your ankle joint. This number is your primary sizing metric.
Measure the Instep: Measure from the front curve of your ankle joint down to the base of your big toe joint.

Buying Too Large for "Extra Safety": Choosing an oversized guard means the top ridge will hit your kneecap every time you flex your leg, pushing the entire guard down and exposing your ankle.
Ignoring Calf Volume: If you have exceptionally thick calves, look for guards with longer strap closures (such as the Fairtex SP5) rather than sizing up in shin height, which can compromise knee alignment.
Testing While Sitting Down: Shin guards feel different when standing than when sitting. Always test your guards while standing, walking, and throwing a few practice checks to ensure the instep hinge moves smoothly.
A properly fitted shin guard should feel like a natural extension of your lower leg. By measuring your shin length accurately and using this shin guard size chart, you can ensure your gear stays locked in place, protects your bones, and allows you to kick with maximum power and confidence.
