Why Your Rashguard Rides Up During Grappling, and How to Prevent It

There is nothing quite as distracting during a hard Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu round or wrestling scramble as your rashguard continuously creeping up toward your chest. Continual readjustments break your focus, expose your skin to mat burn, and give your training partner awkward friction points to hold onto.

Understanding why your rashguard keeps shifting—and how to fix it—is essential for staying protected and focused on the mat. Here is why it happens and how you can stop it for good.

1. The Causes: Why Rashguards Shift and Ride Up

  • Incorrect Sizing and Cut: Wearing a rashguard that is too short in the torso is the primary culprit. Standard compression shirts designed for general gym workouts are cut shorter than specialized combat sports rashguards, causing them to pull up as soon as you raise your arms or flex your core.

  • Inappropriate Hem Construction: Basic athletic shirts rely on simple stitched hems without internal rubberized or silicone grips. Without a tactile surface to anchor against your waist or fight shorts, smooth synthetic fabric naturally glides upward during movements.

  • Taper and Body Profile Disconnect: A shirt that is too loose around the midsection loses its compressional hold. As your opponent pulls on your torso or as you bridge out of side control, excess fabric rolls upward.

2. Practical Solutions: How to Stop the Ride-Up

  • Choose Combat-Specific Long-Torso Cuts: Look for rashguards designed specifically for BJJ and MMA. These feature an extended torso length (often dropping past the hipline) that stays tucked into your shorts even during deep arching, bridging, and inversion movements.

  • Prioritize Silicone Anti-Slip Gel Waistbands: High-performance rashguards include a rubberized or silicone grip strip lining the bottom hem. This strip creates friction against your shorts or skin, locking the garment firmly at your waist.

  • Tuck Your Rashguard Into Internal Drawstring Shorts: Secure your rashguard beneath the waistband of your board shorts or Vale Tudo shorts, then tie the internal drawstring tightly over top. The dual pressure prevents the fabric from pulling free during heavy scrambles.

  • Opt for Flatlock Stitching and Multi-Panel Ergonomics: Multi-panel raglan sleeve construction ensures that when you raise your arms to frame, the pull is isolated to the shoulder panels rather than lifting the entire torso section.

Key Features to Look for in a Grappling Rashguard

  • Extended Torso Length: Covers past the hip bones.

  • Silicone / Rubber Waist Gripper: Anchors hem to waist.

  • Polyester-Spandex / Nylon Blend: Offers 4-way stretch compression.

  • Flatlock Seams: Prevents chafing while maintaining seam strength.
